When I was in Grade 8 I was awarded a violin by the Toronto Public School Board - my very own instrument - what a fantastic gift! Jim and I went to the same school at that time; he was in the assembly when they called out my name and I walked up to the podium to receive my violin, crying my eyes out! About a year later, when I was 13 years old, I decided that I was going to play the violin professionally. This decision was made one day walking home from the Conservatory after a lesson. It wasn't so much that my teacher had inspired me, but a realization that I was infatuated with the violin and loved making music. At the time, I thought that I would be a concert violinist or a symphony player. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that someday I would be rocking the “Five Days in May” solo onstage with the JCB.
